Real clients. Real results.

We recently engaged ATS&L to remove tall trees that were a danger to our home and to complete tree pruning. The tall trees were removed very safely. The teamwork was really impressive. We are very pleased with the service and professionalism of ATS&L and recommend them without any hesitation.

We finally found a landscape crew that does great work and is reasonably priced. We had Sergio and his crew clear out the wooded area in our back lot. They also cleaned up, edged and applied mulch to the flower beds. In the past, we have had other crews smother plants in my flower beds and break branches on shrubs when applying mulch. ATS&L take extra care in the work they do and they take detail to another level. Our yard has never looked better.

ATS&L has been taking care of our yard for over 15 years. From basic yard work to trimming, planting, and mulching to tree removal and creation of new landscaping, they do great work! They have also power washed our house and cleaned our gutters and roof over the years. Marcelino and his son Ignacio are always wonderful to work with.

Tree service questions we get every week

Straight answers on cost, permits, timing, and insurance for Central Virginia property owners.

Ask a question

Most residential removals in Central Virginia fall between $400 and $2,000. The drivers are height, trunk diameter, lean, and access — a 40-foot pine in an open yard is straightforward, while the same tree leaning over a roof with no equipment access takes rigging and costs several times more. Stump grinding is usually quoted separately. We give written estimates after walking the property, never a phone ballpark.

On private residential property in Orange, Culpeper, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties you generally do not need a permit to remove a tree in your own yard. Exceptions apply inside town limits, in designated conservation or Chesapeake Bay Preservation areas, and in neighborhoods with HOA covenants. Fredericksburg has its own tree ordinance for certain properties. We check local requirements before we start.

Late winter — roughly February into early March — is the best window for most deciduous trees here. The tree is dormant, the structure is visible without leaves, and cuts seal quickly once spring growth starts. Avoid heavy pruning in the fall, when cuts heal slowly and invite decay. Dead, damaged, or hazardous limbs are the exception and should come off whenever you spot them.

Usually only when the tree has damaged a covered structure. If a storm drops a tree on your house, garage, or fence, most policies cover removal as part of the claim. A tree that falls in an open yard and hits nothing is typically the homeowner's expense, and so is preventive removal of a tree that is merely dead or leaning. We document storm damage with photos so you have what the adjuster needs.

Yes. We grind stumps below grade and haul off chips, limbs, and debris in the same visit unless you want the chips left for mulch — plenty of clients do. We can also backfill and seed the grind hole so the spot blends back into the lawn instead of sitting as a depression for a season.

For active hazards — a tree on a house, a drive blocked, a limb on a power line — we aim to be on site the same day and often within a couple of hours. Call 540-827-8192 rather than using the form for anything urgent. If a line is involved, contact your utility first; we do not cut energized conductors.
