We dig wider than the industry standard and amend the backfill with compost rather than dropping a root ball into an unamended hole. On the wettest lots we build beds up rather than digging down, so root systems sit above the water table instead of in it. It costs more at installation and it is the difference between plants that establish and plants you replace in year two.
Grading is worth settling before anything decorative goes in. A lot that sheds water toward the foundation, or a low corner that holds standing water for two days after a storm, will undermine whatever gets planted there. It is far cheaper to correct the grade first than to install a landscape and dig it back out.
