How long does concrete take to cure?

Concrete is walkable in about 24 to 48 hours, ready for vehicle traffic at roughly 7 days, and reaches full design strength at 28 days. Those are the numbers that matter for planning. Curing is a chemical reaction, not drying, so we keep new slabs damp in hot weather and covered in cold — rushing it is what produces the surface cracking you see on cheap driveways a year later.

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

Four inches over a properly compacted base handles normal passenger vehicles. Go to five or six inches if you park a truck, RV, trailer, or dumpster on it. In Central Virginia the base matters as much as the thickness — our red clay holds water and heaves, so we excavate and compact a proper gravel base rather than pouring straight onto subgrade.

Is a concrete patio or a paver patio better?

Poured concrete costs less up front, gives you a seamless surface, and suits large simple shapes. Pavers cost more but flex with ground movement instead of cracking, let you replace a single damaged unit, and offer more pattern and color range. In our clay soils pavers tend to age better on anything with slope or drainage complexity, while concrete wins on straightforward flat areas and budget.

Stamped concrete or pavers — which should I choose?

Stamped concrete gives you the look of stone or brick at a lower installed cost and with no joints for weeds. The tradeoff is that it can crack, the color needs resealing every two to three years, and a repair is difficult to hide. Pavers cost more but are individually replaceable and hold color permanently. If you want the look for less and accept resealing, stamped is the value pick.

What is the best time of year to pour concrete in Virginia?

Spring and fall are ideal — air temperatures in the 50s to 70s let concrete cure at a steady rate. We pour through the summer by scheduling early mornings and keeping the slab wet, and we pour in winter using heated blankets and accelerators when the forecast holds above freezing for the cure window. What we do not do is pour onto frozen ground.

Will my new concrete crack?

Some hairline cracking is normal in any slab — concrete shrinks as it cures. The job of the contractor is to control where it happens, which is what the saw-cut control joints are for. Structural cracking, the kind that separates or lifts, comes from a bad base, no reinforcement, or a slab poured too thin. We use fiber mesh or rebar, cut joints at the right spacing, and build the base properly.
